Equine Facts

  • Horses' teeth take up more room in the horses head than its brain does.
  • Horses make eight basic sounds: snort, squeal, greeting nicker, courtship nicker, maternal nicker, neigh, roar and blow.
  • The salivary glands of a horse produce approximately 10-12 litres of salvia a day.
  • The horses digest system is composed of several main components mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and rectum.
  • Horses are herbivores and are classed as monogastric animals like humans they only have one stomach.
  • To eat 1kg of concentrates horses need to chew between 200-1200 times.
  • To eat 1kg of roughage horses need to chew between 3000-5000 times.
